New Sounds Australia Latest #5

Our latest look at some of the latest sounds rocking Australia.

NEW NAVY
'Rosaline' is the first official single from New Navy’s forthcoming debut LP. A twisted love song, it is, say the Sydney outfit, "about that moment when you decide to hold onto something or let it go and its power to dictate fate." With the now familiar liquid vocals and tropical beats sitting softly behind wild and raring hooks, the single marks yet another step forward for the band.

BATTLESHIPS
The Sydney quartet return from a writing and recording hiatus with their new single 'You Can’t Change It'. This is the first offering since 'Take Your Rest' released late last year, and supporting Boy and Bear on an Australian tour. The track was engineered and mixed by Karl Cash (Andy Bull, Art vs Science) and mastered by Don Bartley (The Vines, Silverchair, Savage Garden).

LITTLE DEED
'Neon' is the debut release from Sydney's Little Deed. The somewhat mysterious 23-year-old singer/songwriter (who we know only as 'Ida') started out in a bedroom, honing her guitar-driven indie folk, before expanding and amalgamating industrial electronic sounds with lush, acoustic instrumentation, resulting in this first offering which came out last month. Already drawing inevitable comparisons to London Grammar's Hannah Reid, Little Deed's ethereally faultless vocal style is one with an appeal that should travel well across the ocean to the UK.

THE BLOODPOETS
Brisbane rockers The Bloodpoets have just released their raucous single ‘Destroy the Sun.’ Disturbing plans for cosmic annihilation aside, this fiery song mixes angry vocals with catchy riffs and ballsy distortion. Lead singer Tom Murphy heralds the apocalypse with Cobain like aggressive apathy, and quirky little guitar effects pop up throughout the verses. Following on from the success of their first album 'Polarity', and single 'Borderline', they put out their new album 'The Grand Machine' on August 15.

MADELEINE HUNT
With Kate Bush mania once again taking place in the UK, it's timely to listen to Adelaide's electronic indie artist, 19-year-old Madeleine Hunt, who has been alikened to her in a present-day form for her quirky chord structures and different vocal style. Her three-track debut EP 'Hollow' was released in July and enlists Melbourne hip-hop producer Chuck Daly, and includes the single 'Wings of Stone' below.

MWANSA
Deep rich vocalled Perth-based singer-songwriter Mwansa Msapenda combines electronic, soul and indie pop sounds in his new track, ‘The Kid Has Issues". This is really some track - and some voice. Having started out recording with only some old recording gear at his house, he teamed up with Grammy nominated, multi-platinum producer Ariel Chobaz for the track. Growing up in Zambia, Mwansa began listening to 90’s hip hop music as well as being vocally influenced by soul singers such as Ray Charles, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. Watch this name.
