Listen Up :: New From Australia #6

Our latest look at some of the best sounds currently coming up from Down Under.

SPOOKYLAND
Marking their UK arrival with the ‘Rock and Roll Weakling’ EP on November 3, Sydney quartet Spookyland rock their Americana roots courtesy of nasal warbling frontman Marcus Gordon with the title track as a single release in the US. Emotive, melancholia awash in ocean of poignant  fragility.

PULSE MAVENS
New single and video 'Memories' from the Sydney pop-punk five-piece who formed last year. The catchy, radio-friendly track was written about a relationship and how love triumphs over all things - and is the most pop orientated track on the band’s debut EP 'Fight Back' showing a softer side to the band and a glimpse into their versatility.

HOLY HOLY
Sweeping new alt rock single from the Brisbane/Melbourne duo Holy Holy, who have already made an impressive start over the last year, with singles 'Impossible Like You' and 'House Of Cards' both receiving high rotation on Australia's Triple J and critical acclaim. They embark on the 'History Tour' next month to places like Byron Bay and Wollongong - see their Facebook for dates - which sure beats the likes of Hull and Birmingham for place names.

TIM RHOADES
Moving the Australia boundaries slightly to Australasia to include Wellington, New Zealand's impressive alt-folk acoustic guitarist Tim Rhoades.  This is his poignant debut single - out on September 29; a raw and soulful melodic vocal mixed with his chord-snipping guitar and blended with sympathetic collaboration from folk guitarist Jake Ervin, bass player Steve Moodie and drumming and percussion skills of cousin Mike Rhoades.

SWIM SEASON
Debut single from the Melbourne five-piece Swim Season - previously known as We The People. 'The Throne' is rich and crisp indie-pop, fused with an electronic vibe, shimmering guitar hooks, and big melodic punchy beats.

JL
Perth electronic hip hop artist Alex Hiew, or simply JL as he is known on the music platform, is fast garnering a reputation in his field as a remixer extraordinare. Coming up early last year, he has been prolific in working on new tracks by the month, and turning in some impressive stuff along the way. 'What U Do' is the latest of his own works, but do check out his smoothly sublime remix of Problems' 'Capture Me'.
